Generic Tamiflu (oseltamivir) is an antiviral medication that is used to treat flu symptoms caused by influenza virus by blocking the actions of influenza virus types A and B in your body - also effective in cases of swine flu.
Tamiflu is effective in patients who have had symptoms for less than two days or to prevent influenza in people who may have been exposed but are not yet presenting symptoms.
It will not treat the common cold.

Drug Medical Information

Dosage:

• Tamiflu treatment should start as soon as flu symptoms present.
• To treat flu symptoms: Take every 12 hours for five days. Can be taken with or without food.
• To prevent flu symptoms: Take every 24 hours for ten days or as prescribed. Follow your doctor's instructions. Can be taken with or without food.
• Take Tamiflu for the entire prescribed duration even if you begin to feel better. Symptoms may show improvement before the infection is completely treated.

Drug interactions:

You should mention to your doctor if you have received a nasal flu vaccine within the past two weeks, or if you have heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, or if you have any condition causing swelling or disorder of the brain.

Pregnancy:

Please consult your doctor as to whether you should receive this medication, especially if you have a high risk of infection with swine flu (H1N1 influenza). It is not known whether oseltamivir passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not take this medication without speaking with your doctor if you are currently nursing. Do not give this medication to a child younger than 1-year old.

Side effects:

Some people using this medicine have had rare side effects of

• sudden confusion
• delirium
• hallucinations
• unusual behavior
• self-injury

These symptoms have occurred most often in children. It is not known whether Tamiflu was the exact cause of these symptoms. However, anyone using this medicine should be watched closely for signs of confusion or unusual behavior.
